Ingredients

  • FOR THE CAKE:
  • 1 cup Bread Crumbs (for Baking Pan)
  • 1 cup Butter (2 Sticks, Softened)
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 4  Eggs, Separated
  • 4 ounces, weight Unsweetened Chocolate
  • ½ cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2-½ cups Cake Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream
  • Ingredients For Coconut-Pecan Filling And Topping:
  • 3  Egg Yolks, Separated
  • ½ cups Butter (1 Stick), Softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 can Evaporated Milk 12 Oz
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Chopped Pecans
  • 2 cups Flaked Coconut

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare 3 9-inch round baking pans, grease them and coat with bread crumbs. In a deep bowl, add softened butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolks one after another, making sure the mix is soft and smooth.

In a small saucepan melt the chocolate. Stir it together with water on a low heat. After it cools of, add to the batter and mix well. Add Vanilla extract.

Combine cake flour, baking soda and salt together; mix it with the batter alternately with heavy cream. Beat well after each addition.

In a separate bowl put 4 egg whites and beat them until stiff peaks form. Add them to the mixture and beat it again. The batter should be very soft and creamy. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pans, dividing equally between all 3 pans. Bake for about 30 min or until the toothpick comes out clean.

For the Coconut-Pecan Filling and Topping, separate egg yolks from the egg whites, put them in a saucepan and whisk. Add softened butter, sugar, evaporated milk and milk. Mix all ingredients well and cook over low/medium heat for about 12-15 minutes until it gets thicker. It is important to constantly stir it while cooking, so it will have no lumps and will not burn. When it gets thicker, remove it from the heat and stir it in pecans and coconut mix. Let it cool off for about 25-30 minutes, beating occasionally with a spoon. When it gets the right consistency, spread the filling over the layers, one after another. Use the remaining filling for the top and the sides.

For decoration, you can use dark shredded chocolate and pecans or make a chocolate ganache and spread it over the cake. Enjoy your delicious German Chocolate Cake and don’t forget to leave a comment on this recipe with your experience making this yummy dessert!
