What to look for before buying mochi?
No kidding, only looking at mochi will solve your problems I bet. Here are some tips you may follow-
Authentic shop: To savor the taste of authentic Japanese mochi, look for old shops. Little Tokyo in LA sells mochi for over 116 years!
But it isn’t a must requirement. There are new shops, especially, online shops that sell great quality mochis.
Only check the flour type. Sweet glutenous flour or Mochiko is the best type of flour to make the outer portion of mochi.
The types: As I said before, some mochis are eaten as a dessert. Some are savory, enjoyed with soup. There is also mochi that serves as ready-to-go snacks.
To make things clear, I am putting mochi in three different types. (These types are widely popular outside Japan)
Mochi with fillings is called Daifuku. Mochi in skewer is Dango. And the last one is mochi ice cream. All three of them taste heavenly.
Fillings: Mochi has hundreds of filling. Peanut, green tea, chocolate, fruits, even red beans! Choose a filling that you have no allergy issues with.
What aisle is mochi in grocery stores?
Among other mochi types, mochi ice cream is widely available in grocery stores. I found mochi in the frozen food aisle. Look where frozen desserts are kept.
Your local Asian grocery stores also have mochi in the snacks aisle. The international aisle may also have mochi.
Some specialty grocery shops have mochi bars/ stalls in them. You can buy wholesale from the stalls.
