Where To Buy Mochi?

As you’ve come this far, I don’t need to introduce mochi to you. This cute round and, squishy ball with every possible filling has possibly won your heart.

Mochi, a Japanese staple food, has become a fancy dessert in the USA. People used to take it with soup. But it’s more popular as a fancy ice cream today.

If you’re wondering where to find mochi, you came to the right place. Here I’ll share all my views, knowledge, and resources to get the best mochi in town.

What to look for before buying mochi?

No kidding, only looking at mochi will solve your problems I bet. Here are some tips you may follow-

Authentic shop: To savor the taste of authentic Japanese mochi, look for old shops. Little Tokyo in LA sells mochi for over 116 years!

But it isn’t a must requirement. There are new shops, especially, online shops that sell great quality mochis.

Only check the flour type. Sweet glutenous flour or Mochiko is the best type of flour to make the outer portion of mochi.

The types: As I said before, some mochis are eaten as a dessert. Some are savory, enjoyed with soup. There is also mochi that serves as ready-to-go snacks.

To make things clear, I am putting mochi in three different types. (These types are widely popular outside Japan)

Mochi with fillings is called Daifuku. Mochi in skewer is Dango. And the last one is mochi ice cream. All three of them taste heavenly.

Fillings: Mochi has hundreds of filling. Peanut, green tea, chocolate, fruits,  even red beans! Choose a filling that you have no allergy issues with.

What aisle is mochi in grocery stores?

Among other mochi types, mochi ice cream is widely available in grocery stores. I found mochi in the frozen food aisle. Look where frozen desserts are kept.

Your local Asian grocery stores also have mochi in the snacks aisle. The international aisle may also have mochi.

Some specialty grocery shops have mochi bars/ stalls in them. You can buy wholesale from the stalls.

Where to buy mochi?

Amazon

What can be a better opponent for finding low-priced mochi, other than Amazon? You’ll find various types and brands of mochi here.

Up for a sweet treat? Fruits Mochi Daifuku Ichigo has a delicious fruity filling. Strawberry, banana, and peach. Each box has 8 mochis, contained in a transparent packet.

This brand got a high review on Amazon. Their mochi contains gelatin that comes from pork. So it’s not halal.

For a more diverse taste, you can try Fusion Select Store’s Japanese Mochi Variety Pack.

It comes with Red beans, Taro, Green Tea, and Lychee flavors. These aren’t mochi ice creams, but ready-to-eat snacks. You may refrigerate these mochis for a dessert-like taste.

Fusion mochis are vegan, and halal so you can enjoy these awesome flavors with zero hesitation. I also found other flavors. Coconut Pandan, Sesame, Hamimelon, Green Tea, Peanut & Red Bean in Fusion Select Gift Box.

The perfect gift for any mochi lover, with 8 flavors included.

Walmart

Mochi and ice cream are a great combo. Our favorite Walmart has My/Mochi Ice Cream in the frozen foods aisle. They have various flavors in stock, which include- vanilla, double chocolate, cookies and creams, strawberry, and mango.

There are also Sweety Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream Pieces, 8.4 oz. 6 count. This brand has a Vietnamese coffee flavor available.

Kroger

The next big grocery store, Kroger also has the My/Mochi brand available. Other than this brand, you may try Formosa Yay Red Bean Imperial Mochi. This is a product of Japan. It also comes with the traditional red bean filling.

There is also mochi ice cream in the ice cream aisle.

Instacart

Instacart gives you a lot of options for mochi shopping. Bubbies Mochi Mango Ice Cream,

Mochi-Mochi Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream

 Imuraya Mochi Coconut Cream Dessert

and Maeda En Ice Cream, Mochi, Vanilla.

Bubbies brand has exotic flavors. Red velvet, salted caramel, blood orange, green tea to plain old vanilla.

Of course, you’ll find the popular brand, My/Mo here too.

Whole Foods

If you’re a mochi lover, and still didn’t go to Whole Foods, what are you even doing!

Because Whole Foods has a whole mochi bar for us. The bar has  Strawberry, Vanilla Bean, Matcha Green Tea, Red Bean, Double Chocolate, Black Sesame, Kona Coffee, and Mango flavors available. You can enjoy a mochi for $2.

If the mochi bar seems expensive, Whole Foods also has packet options for you. Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts has multiple flavors of mochi ice creams for you.

Trader Joes

Trader Joe has Ube Mochi. The ice cream filling is vanilla-pistachio flavor. The outer dough is purple. Each Ube mochi is 80 calories and comes with a 6-count pack.

Thai Tea Mini Mochi is a dairy-free option you may try.

Mochidoki

How do I describe this store? Elegant? Exquisite? I would prefer all of these adjectives. Mochidoki is an online mochi store, but this just isn’t it. They make mochi very appealing.

Mochidoki has vegan and gluten-free options. The best part is, that most of their product comes in a 24-count package. You can try their Espresso and Black Sesame, two of their bestsellers.

My Mochi

This one is another mochi store I must mention. My Mochi’s availability is very high compared to other brands. And the flavors are endless. One thing I appreciate is their eye-catching packaging. It makes a great gift for every age.

Don’t want to try a mochi recipe in your kitchen? You must try this homemade mochi recipe.

Top 10 Mochi You Should Buy Today

Japanese Mochi 8 Variety Pack
I’ve been trying to get some good mochi for quite a while now. I’ve tried almost every variety but didn’t get a satisfactory result.

The ones that I like are the ones that have a soft, chewy texture, but unfortunately, most of the ones that I’ve tried don’t taste very good either. And of course, most of the mochi that you buy from the supermarket or convenience store is made of rice flour. But recently, I found this brand on Amazon.
Fusion Select’s Mochis are authentic, made with mochiko flour. It’s the perfect choice for all occasions, including birthdays, parties, and the new year.

WHERE TO BUY
ROYAL FAMILY JAPANESE RICE CAKE MOCHI DAIFUKU
The Royal Family Japanese Rice Cake Mochi Daifuku has been my favorite red bean mochi since the day I tried it. It’s sweet, but not overly sweet, and the texture is perfect – dense and chewy. These aren’t quite as chewy as Nutella, but they’re still soft enough to be enjoyable.

I’m glad they’re Gluten-Free because I have Celiac Disease and I have to avoid anything that contains Gluten. It’s so frustrating because I can eat some things, but not all of them.

I’m really happy with the design of this box. If you’re looking for a great chocolate rice cake that’s Gluten-Free, then definitely check out this company. They have some great products, and their Rice Cake Mochi Daifuku is my favorite.

Fruits Mochi Daifuku Ichigo(strawberry)
I really enjoyed this Daifuku Ichigo mochi. It was a little sweeter than I expected, but I was able to deal with it. It’s very light and soft, so it’s easy to bite into.

The coating is very fluffy, and it’s got a good flavor. They provide only fruity flavors, and they’re all good.

These mochis are definitely worth a try if you want something different.

Overall, this is one of the best ones I’ve had. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a tasty mochi treat.

ROYAL FAMILY JAPANESE MIXED MOCHI (ASSORTED)
As you’ve come this far, you already know I’m a sucker for Japanese snacks. I have a lot of mochi-loving friends so it’s always been one of my favorite things to order when eating out at Japanese restaurants.

I’ve had a hard time finding mochi in grocery stores in the past, so when I learned about the Royal Family, I knew I had to try some. They’re available in the frozen section of the grocery store. So I had to try them because they sounded too good to be true.

They come individually wrapped, which is a nice touch, and they’re really cheap. It’s perfect for making a quick snack for yourself. You can just pop one in your mouth and it’s ready to go!

WHERE TO BUY
Japanese Mochi Fruits Daifuku (Rice Cake)
I’ve been looking for a new brand of fruit snacks for my son. So far, I’ve tried the “Original” and “Peanut Butter & Jelly” flavored mochi. Neither of those is what I wanted.

I tried these and they’re so good! They’re great for when you want to satisfy your sweet tooth but you don’t want to overdo it. They’re not overly sweet, but still, have a nice amount of sugar in them. My son and I can both enjoy them without any complaints. He actually prefers them to his other favorites.

Yuki and Love Boba Milk Tea Mochi
If you’re a fan of boba drinks, this mochi is for you. So far I’ve only tried them at Panda Express (in the U.S.), but they were a hit!

When I first bit into the mochi, it had this great, buttery-flavored texture. After I swallowed, I was expecting more of a milk tea flavor because of the boba pearls, but instead, it had a distinct sweetness and fruity taste to it.

It’s like you’re drinking a fruit shake made of boba pearls. The mochi is very chewy and the softness of the mochi contrasts nicely with the chewiness of the boba.

Overall, this product is very addictive and I’m excited to try the other flavors too! It has 60 pieces inside a small pouch, so it’s easy to grab a couple for the road. If you love boba, this one’s for you!

Japanese Fruits Daifuku Mochi - Chocolate Flavors
I have always loved chocolate and I like to eat it whenever I get the chance. But snacking on chocolate didn’t fill me up.

WHERE TO BUY

Amazon has these sweet desserts, and pretty much every big grocery store has them. Among my mochi, my favorite is the black bean mochi in terms of flavors. You can go wild and try every flavor. But make sure you chew them properly, as there is a chance of getting choked.
